“This training really taught me the way of thinking about my feelings and that I am powerful, strong, and important, I would encourage anyone who is going through a hard time to take this class. It’s truly a life change in thinking, living, and how I view myself and others.”
Alexandra
“I’ve learned that in developing my personal life and how I react to situations, I can also develop my professional life. While work-life balance is important, Upstream has helped me connect how my emotions and reactions influence life in and out of the office. Our whole team has learned how to see all types of things through a different lens and we’ve become better at identifying the whole picture of certain situations.”

"Not only has this program changed my life, but it’s now changed lives around me. My son is currently meeting with Troy because he saw such a difference in me that he wanted to see if he could help him too. My girlfriend is meeting with Troy in the next couple weeks and I believe some other family members may be as well. This is all because of the change they have seen! Now if that’s not powerful I don’t know what is.

"I underestimated how helpful this would be before going in. Troy and the group gave me a greater knowledge, the knowhow to move on away from my past, toward my future and how to manage my emotions. I had so much I didn’t know how to handle and I’m so grateful to understand now. Thank you!"

”This course has changed my life in more ways than I thought possible. I now face adversity with open arms and I’m able to overcome by thinking in a positive, clear frame of mind. Basically, this has made me a better person. I like myself again and the more I practice these skills the better my life is getting and will get. Thank you!”

“I’m humbled every week about how I can learn how to get better as a leader through understanding the psychology of how we all operate. Not only am I applying this in my professional life, but I’m also applying it at home with my family. It’s nice that Troy works with the management team and the rest of the staff and keeps it all confidential. This allows everybody to be honest and open. It’s also very cool to see how our team is applying these tools we’re learning almost every time I talk to them. I can’t wait to see how we continue to apply what we’ve learned.”

“Before Upstream, I felt as if I was already trying to “upstream” my life. I now have the tools to build on myself and those around me.”
For more than two years, Troy volunteered his time every week inside the Cass County Jail, delivering what would eventually become Beyond the Barriers. Using the same Upstream Model™ he teaches in all his programs, he led sessions with incarcerated men, tracked attendance for over 1,500 participants, awarded certificates of completion, and held one-on-one visits with individuals—both while they were inside and after release or transfer to prison. With an average jail stay of just 20 days, many asked how they could continue the class after they got out.
The demand only grew, and requests for individual visits increased, and more voices called for the program to be made available to the women in the jail.
In November 2024, Troy expanded the program to serve the female population at Cass County Jail. But with demand continuing to rise, it became clear: the work could no longer be sustained through volunteer hours alone.
In January 2025, Beyond the Barriers officially began its transition into a nonprofit organization with a mission to break the cycles of trauma, addiction, and incarceration. They partnered with Deep Roots Recovery as a fiscal sponsor, allowing them to receive tax-deductible donations while their 501(c)(3) status is in progress.
Today, Beyond the Barriers also offers the full skills program to individuals in recovery and those recently released from incarceration—providing support, structure, and real tools for change.
We’ve already seen the ripple effects. Over 2,000 people have gone through the program. And now, with dedicated resources and community support, Beyond the Barries is ready to teach more inmates to learn how to effectively address and heal their trauma, model healthy thinking, learn self-regulation and positive behaviors. This gives them the ability to pass these skills down to the next generation.
